The Legal Affairs Department is the National Assembly’s in-house legal team.
The Department coordinates the administration and overall management of the legal services provided to the National Assembly, including the National Assembly Authority, National Assembly Committees, individual National Assembly Members, and the National Assembly Service, in the discharge of their respective constitutional mandates.
The Department provides technically adequate, independent, and impartial legal opinions and advice on all matters before or relating to the National Assembly. This includes advising the Clerk of the National Assembly on matters relating to legislative competence, corporate governance, legal probity, and risk management in the performance of the Assembly’s functions.
The Department also contributes to the governance process, through drafting non-Government Bills for Acts of the National Assembly at the behest of individual National Assembly Members and National Assembly Committees.
